Sibling Rivalry

I spoke with a friend from Cleveland and we shared some laughs over how incredibly similar our cities are in almost all ways other than topography and NFL football success! We are, indeed, siblings - blue-collar, Midwestern industrial cities with salt-of-the-earth, hard-working people. Both cities have seen the old, benevolent corporate "parents" cease to exist over the last twenty or so years. Although we've both made moves to reinvent ourselves, but just can't seem to make major strides or shake off the negativism.

Cleveland and Pittsburgh are both dominated by the top-down, chain-of-command thinking that came out of our corporate industry pasts. What we desperately need is some paradigm shifting, bottom-up approaches to address our weaknesses.

Along with this it would be FANTASTIC if we could just forget about the football rivalry (other than two Sundays a year!) and join forces to move forward. We continue to harm ourselves by being barely willing to acknowledge that the other city exists. I don't know if you've driven to Cleveland, but, here's a news flash, you can get there quicker (and easier) than you can to Harrisburg or State College. I've made it from my garage to downtown Cleveland in about 2 1/4 hours.

I've taken a personal pledge to see what I can do to get some activities coordinated between our cities, and encourage you to consider the possibilities.
